Q&A: Will a rogue antispyware program steal your credit card # if entered, or just take that one payment?

Question by Mark: Will a rogue antispyware program steal your credit card # if entered, or just take that one payment?
My dad was gullible enough to pay $ 50 via credit card to a fake, rogue antispyware program called PC Antispyware 2010, and I want to know if it will steal my dad’s credit card number, or just take that one payment without keeping his credit card number in any records to manipulate.

Answer by x_southernbelle
You dad made a grave mistake! Tell him to contact his credit card company IMMEDIATELY to report what has happened so they might be able to stop payment or recoup the payment if the payment has already been made.

Q&A: Will a rogue antispyware program steal your credit card # if entered, or just take that one payment?

As for what the rogue company will do with the info is anyone’s guess. But you can bet it will NOT be good!!! Identity theft comes to mind as does the unbridled use of that credit account for other nefarious purposes all the while running up the balance owed…by guess who – your dad!!!

If it were me (but would NEVER be because I refuse to buy things on-line), I would cancel that credit account and create a new one. Tell your dad _*NEVER*_ ever to put his credit card, bank account numbers or ANY other personal information on the web ever again for maximum protection and security of his identity and his money….not to mention the ha$ $ les of getting rid of the rogue-ware from the computer.

How does the dell preffered program work?

Question by doodiec: How does the dell preffered program work?
I wanted to get a new Dell laptop but I dont have the money to pay it all on the spot. I saw that the “Dell Preferred Plan/Program” lets you pay a certain amount per month for x number of years. How does that program actually work? Are there any no-no’s or advantages or disadvantages? Are there any hidden -anything- that I should know about? Any experiences?

Or if you dont have any experience with it, is there any advice?

Answer by truextremeicon
The dell preferred program works the same way as a car loan would pretty much. You are basically just financing your purchase instead of paying it all at once.

I can’t vouch for their service personally (I’ve always paid straight up), but please for the love of god make sure that you know what you are getting into first. I have heard some horror stories about how they will grant you a free year of no interest, but then all of a sudden jack up your interest rate to like 20%.

Just be careful before signing off on computer financing and if you do decide to finance your purchase, try to pay it off as early as possible just in case they do try and screw you.

How do I go about learning to program simple bookkeeping software in JAVA?

6789384994 b8f6331e7a m How do I go about learning to program simple bookkeeping software in JAVA?
by European Parliament

Question by Marcello: How do I go about learning to program simple bookkeeping software in JAVA?
I know enough Java to run many very simple programs and really just learning the basics of GUI. I want to program a piece of software for basic bookkeeping as a project to practice learning more java and I am wondering what you would recommend I do (or where to begin).

I have thought about the finding some existing bookkeeping programs and just manipulating them to what I am trying to accomplish but I also wonder if I would be better off (from a learning perspective) building something from scratch. The program on overall won’t be too complex but will include some input and outputting features and probably a download to excel component.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer by codewriterdavid
My advice: do both. Start your own project from scratch so that you learn the basic Java stuff, including all the project-related things like where to put files, how to set up unit tests, and all the other stuff that you have to know to program effectively (and all of this is above and beyond learning the syntax of the language).

But you should also get comfortable browsing through OPC (Other People’s Code), so you might want to take a peek at some completed Open Source projects like jGnash or GFP (both available at sourceforge.net). This is especially helpful if you are not a domain expert in finance and you don’t want to spend all of your time figuring out (or reinventing) basic financial concepts.

This may sound like the hard answer, but if you want to learn to program, you are right that you should do some things yourself. But if you are going to start your own project from scratch, it would be smart to at least look at some other code to give you some ideas, especially for ideas that are mostly domain-specific. So in the end, you would probably end up doing it both ways anyway!

I hope this helps!

p.s. — The second link below, for GFP, looks like it should be a typo (“/gfd”), but I got it straight from sourceforge. Weird.

What is the most lucrative computer program a person could learn?

8232795962 088c6c6fab m What is the most lucrative computer program a person could learn?
by EU Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection

Question by Psycho Fox: What is the most lucrative computer program a person could learn?
e.g., is there a program that if someone learned at an expert level, they could bill out their time at $ 100 – 200 or more an hour.

I’m not asking as a career choice. I’m a designer. I suck with computer. I met a lady who is an expert in Oracle or SQL or something like that and she makes a killing just working from home or traveling to corporate offices and telling them how to set up their programs or whatever.

Answer by Vomit
You do realize that it will take years of training and experience to be able to do that, right? SQL is databases. To command that kind of salary, you need to know SQL backward and forward, which means a LOT of knowledge, probably some PHP, and a firm grasp of relational algebra, among many things.

To command that kind of salary with ANY software means you’ll need a lot of dedication to learn exactly how everything works. If you’re not planning that as a career choice then you’re probably wasting your time.

Answer by TheDonutHero
There shouldn’t be much risk if you’re protected. If you have a antivirus program you’re good to go. But when you’re making transactions, check if https:// is in the URL. The usual protocol is just http. The s behind it means it’s secured. If there isn’t one and you don’t have another site to go to, just type in https:// infront and that should only allow you and the other recipient to communicate. No one else should be able to converse. You can try this on a trusted website like Amazon. Add random things into your cart, checkout and you should see the https:// in the URL.
