What are the difficulties encountered by victim’s of identity theft?
Question by Wonderman: What are the difficulties encountered by victim’s of identity theft?
Best answer:
Answer by Kacky
It depends on the extent of the theft. I had a debit card number stolen, and it was discovered pretty quickly and cancelled. The thief didn’t want my money. They sold the number to someone who used it to buy several small items online to generate commissions for themselves. So I had no effects except a few days of hassle getting everything closed, refunded and reported.
But for people whose bank accounts are cleaned out, social security number stolen, and the thief goes on to apply for credit in their name, it can get a lot worse than that.:
Bill collectors hounding you.
Being turned down for a job for failing a credit check.
Losing money before you discovered the theft
Unable to get a loan for a home, car or school
Unable to get a credit card
High car insurance rates because they base it on your credit score
Time and energy to get it canceled every time they get a new credit card in your name

Q&A: What to do if you think you are at risk of becoming a victim of identity theft?
Question by James: What to do if you think you are at risk of becoming a victim of identity theft?
Is there a way to alert the credit reporting agencies or to protect yourself better? I think that someone has information which could easily lead to stealing my identity but I don’t think they have actually stolen my identity yet but they could. Any suggestions?

Q&A: I think someone has stolen my identity!?
Question by sandcreekfarms.manager: I think someone has stolen my identity!?
My name and exact birth-date match someone else living in a town in texas that doesn’t exist. My SSL is also like that (or at least that was where to computer took me to when I typed it in) I tried to look up my credit report and none of the three top sites worked. Two of them said that my credit could be frozen or something like that and the other site had no record of my existence. Should I be worried?
Best answer:
Answer by fragmentsofmemories
Are you serious?
If someone really did steal your identity, you wouldn’t be asking people for help from an Internet forum.
If you’re that worried, call the 800 numbers on the credit bureau and call the SSA.
Sheesh.

Now we just need to make sure that you are really you. These questions are based on information in your file, and only you should know the answers to them.

it’s a security thing. They ask everyone that, even me. I put non of the above for the mortgage, and other for the monthly payment, and it was right. They know you don’t have a mortgage, they want to make sure you are really you. annualcreditreport.com is a free (completely) and absolutely legit website to get your credit report. You have to pay to see your FICO, but you can get a free report once a year from that website (which is affiliated with all 3 of the credit bureaus).
