What do I need to know about my computer/motherboard before finding video card compatibility?
Question by : What do I need to know about my computer/motherboard before finding video card compatibility?
Could someone list the required details? I’m no expert with computers, but with simple list of what I need to know I should be able to figure it out. I’ve recently purchased an incompatible video card without doing enough research, so I need to make sure I get it right this time.

You need to know what expansion slot/s your computer has.
ie: PCI, PCIe X1, PCIeX16, AGP, etc….
Check your manual or go to your computer maker’s website and check the specs for your eaxact model

How does EBAY know specific info about me?
Question by Sofia: How does EBAY know specific info about me?
Recently my son opened up an account on Ebay and after selling for about 2 weeks they limited his activies and wanted him to verify personal information. The personal information to my surprise was about me, his mother! Now, the only thing that has both of our names on it that can link us is medical, birth and school records. How is ebay getting my information? What are they using to get this information? I watch my credit reports very closley and nothing has been pulled, nor have any surveys been taken. I feel that my privacy has been invaded. Any thoughts?

How do I go about learning to program simple bookkeeping software in JAVA?
Question by Marcello: How do I go about learning to program simple bookkeeping software in JAVA?
I know enough Java to run many very simple programs and really just learning the basics of GUI. I want to program a piece of software for basic bookkeeping as a project to practice learning more java and I am wondering what you would recommend I do (or where to begin).
I have thought about the finding some existing bookkeeping programs and just manipulating them to what I am trying to accomplish but I also wonder if I would be better off (from a learning perspective) building something from scratch. The program on overall won’t be too complex but will include some input and outputting features and probably a download to excel component.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks.

My advice: do both. Start your own project from scratch so that you learn the basic Java stuff, including all the project-related things like where to put files, how to set up unit tests, and all the other stuff that you have to know to program effectively (and all of this is above and beyond learning the syntax of the language).
But you should also get comfortable browsing through OPC (Other People’s Code), so you might want to take a peek at some completed Open Source projects like jGnash or GFP (both available at sourceforge.net). This is especially helpful if you are not a domain expert in finance and you don’t want to spend all of your time figuring out (or reinventing) basic financial concepts.
This may sound like the hard answer, but if you want to learn to program, you are right that you should do some things yourself. But if you are going to start your own project from scratch, it would be smart to at least look at some other code to give you some ideas, especially for ideas that are mostly domain-specific. So in the end, you would probably end up doing it both ways anyway!
I hope this helps!
p.s. — The second link below, for GFP, looks like it should be a typo (“/gfd”), but I got it straight from sourceforge. Weird.

Question by Median E. Raw: What is the best way to use my credit card online without having to worry about security?!?
I Understand there are lots of threats online.. therefor i’m looking into a way of using my credit card online with a maximum security “Other than virtual credit cards” which i find to be very limited and doesn’t provide consumer protection if abused by a seller..

Either using Paypal, or big names. Like paying Amazon, Ebay, Buy, Bestbuy, all that.
Big companies use secure servers, so if you have not heard of something, do not buy from them

I need good advice about an online site?
Question by Rex: I need good advice about an online site?
I ordered a couple of DVD sets off a website, using a money order, well I sent the MO to the address, about a week ago, and they haven’t got it, apparently the dvds were on sale, and I was told by e-mail that they’ll be gone by the end of the day or tomorrow, and the man in charge of the site also advised me to cancel the order and re-order them with a credit card (which I don’t have), yet I clearly stated to him that I sent the money a week ago, what should I do? and tell him?
They obviously don’t honor money orders, yet thats one of their payment options.
And another thing, they sent me everything I bought in the past, which wasnt much, but still he’s ignoring money orders and only taking credit cards, he shouldn’t even use money orders as a payment option.
thank you all for your advice, and answers!

they must have a address were you sent the money orders, write him a letter. asking for the return of your money or goods, if the order has been cashed and no goods then that is theft, if its in your own country, call the police if its in a foriegn country, then they must have a department that deals with internet/fraud. regards lf

There shouldn’t be much risk if you’re protected. If you have a antivirus program you’re good to go. But when you’re making transactions, check if https:// is in the URL. The usual protocol is just http. The s behind it means it’s secured. If there isn’t one and you don’t have another site to go to, just type in https:// infront and that should only allow you and the other recipient to communicate. No one else should be able to converse. You can try this on a trusted website like Amazon. Add random things into your cart, checkout and you should see the https:// in the URL.
