Q&A: Constant identity theft, is changing my social sec number the solution?

Question by Mel: Constant identity theft, is changing my social sec number the solution?
I’ve been getting negative reports on my credit history all due to some freak who keeps using my social security card number to open bank accounts and getting loans under obscure post office box addresses. The damned credit reporting bureaus don’t do a damned thing, and I’ve reported each and every faudulant account for almost a year now.

The banks and insurance companies take their sweet time in taking care of the matter, and tell me that the reason is because the person who opened the account (the criminal) can’t be reached (no shit, he opens accounts under po boxes ffs).

So what can I do? Do I just change my social security number? I have id protection but all it does is inform me when the idiot opens yet another account under my name. This is almost a joke if it wasn’t my credit being affected, and therefore my ability to buy a car, buy a house. I have even had an important credit card canceled due to this, and I have ALWAYS had great credit.

Is changing my social the answer?
Dude, I have no idea how he is able to open those accounts.

I assume he has a fake social security card with my name and number on it (actually he uses slightly altered versions of my name).

Q&A: Constant identity theft, is changing my social sec number the solution?

I’m almost hopeless, the only thing is for me to either get a new social or get myself a lawyer, but I am dead broke these days.
…I forgot to say that he likely has a fake DL with my slightly altered personal info.

Scary, frustrating, and angering all in one.

That might help you some. Hope it stops because that can do a lot of damage.
