Are there lots of vulnerabilities in commonly used programs?

by Ars Electronica

Question by Moe Joe: Are there lots of vulnerabilities in commonly used programs?
Are there lots of vulnerabilities in commonly used computer programs that hackers have little desire to exploit? Or are most programs fairly hard to crack, even if a hacker wanted to? Thanks. Just recently found an interest in computer security.

Answer by m b
This is a pretty complex question nearly all os’s and large projects with network interaction contain bug’s that could if found be exploited by hackers for example lets look at something big like the windows os updates every 3-5 days on average atleast 5-10 security updates every 3 months now what that basically is saying is 5-10 things more are needed to keep you safe this may be a bug in there original code that allows a exploit or a backdoor trojan etc or could just be to stop someone putting a mp3 on there site that gets opened by windows media player and then the site is able to query your windows media player history seeing what songs you have recently listened to (information they shouldn’t have but even with it not a lot they can do)

I think we have to define vulnerability before we can answer this question
since “Are there lots of vulnerabilities in commonly used computer programs that hackers have little desire to exploit?”

this is where every one goes off on a bit

I consider
a virus
( a software program capable of reproducing itself and usually capable of causing great harm of which in my 20 years worked in building computers for 5 years then working in repairs of 7 of those and software development for around 7 now I have only come across 3 true computer virus in all that time people that say they have computer virus are 99% of the time mistaken they have a lot of malware or spyware or redirectors etc not a virus example if u have a virus you know about it 1 of worse 1s ever saw was on the 386 and dos 4 omg even formatting it would make pointers in the ram to reinstall it self on boot you had to format turn pc off pull power cable out for 12 secs to get rid of it any floppy disk you put on it would copy it self and it would write it self in to the main mbr boot loader as well so getting rid of it was such a pain first time I tried to remove it using a boot floppy disk it copied it self on to the ram partition and the floppy disk before the prompt had even loaded didn’t make the same mistake again to put in a floppy disk with out the write protection tab removed that was a TRUE VIRUS)

Are there lots of vulnerabilities in commonly used programs?

a trojan
that install a keylogger or does data theft or remote access these are semi common but again not all are as high risk as others some do very little

i consider if some got them on there machine it to be a serious breech in security

I dont consider
maleware worms or spyware harmfull they tend to not change the computer purpose or cause damage there main aim * is popups which are a pain but not dangerous altough they can cause problems there generally not there to get anything worth while having

with that in mind you then have to think ok can someone run a JavaScript query on a web session and get information they shouldn’t probably can they acceses my bank account highly unlikely if they tried non stop and where specifily targeting me could they likely but why would they you are but 1 in millions that use they net and there are easier targets (idiots that give that information away)

I consider my self to run a pretty secure system this computer currently running linux kernel 3.5 and goes through a firewall on a separate server that’s running a BSD based kernel is it safe yeh no1 should be able to access by which I mean ok if a team of dedicated hackers spent an entire day on it im sure they could brute force there way through a few ports maybe not remote acesses or be able to get any of my passwords or credit cards since I dont store that info on my pc but im sure they could do a dns attack on me and maybe get a few files that are not secured on apache infact they can defiently since got no protection on that but there nothing on that worth having but why the hell would a few of them spend a entire day to see whats on my pc surely they have better things to do…. you get my point)

to some it up its like of course there are exploits in nearly every bit of software we use but thats why there are updates of nearly all software regularly since exploits bug’s security threats do get found and patched. but remember a lot of “serious security threats” are more inconvenience if they happen to you not end of the world like virus scanners and malware scanners etc claim in there adverts

Answer by georgia79
Okay be extremely wary of using your credit card on line because once you have submitted your cc number it becomes accessible to the company and they will continue to bill you for various iteims. Always read the fine print I have had this problem many times and this has caused my bank account to bounce like a basketball. What they do is say you order a cd online and only want that cd well they will continue to send you cd’s that you did not order or do not want and charge you for it….BE VERY CAREFUL

How to get a video with copyrighted music past Youtube?

Question by Annonymous: How to get a video with copyrighted music past Youtube?
I need help, I uploaded A completely original video using some songs, Epic Cowe the Moosical, and it called it copyrighted. I have included songs in my previous Epic Cowe videos and gotten them onto Youtube easily, how can I make Epic Cowe the Moosical get on youtube?

Best answer:

How to get a video with copyrighted music past Youtube?

Answer by JIM
Music copyright law has been around for over sixty years and is not a “YouTube rule”.
YouTube are under increasing pressure from copyright owners to remove delinquent content; and YouTube are legally required to comply and get sued themselves.
YouTube itself was originally set up for ordinary people to share HOME videos – videos shot with a camera (or phone), 100% the user’s own content, both images and sound.
The teen obsession with uploading random images accompanied by commercially released music was never foreseen and it is only in the last couple of years that copyright owners have gotten wise to it and begun watching YouTube very carefully

How do I share File in Server 2K8 R2?

by European External Action Service – EEAS

Question by Bhutanese Dude: How do I share File in Server 2K8 R2?
We have Server with Windows Server 2K8 R2 and about 20 users, working in 5 Departments. I want to have a File Shared among users in Departments. Like, Finance people of 4 users will have One Same folder shared from Server, so that the other people from other department are not allowed to access the Files/Folders shared within Finance and same structure in rest of the department. And at the same time, the Finance users shall also have a access to another General Shared Folder from Server which shall be used by all, so that they can share what they want with other department. Please advice me on how to do it.

NOTE: I don’t want to use Active Directory in this case.

Urgently needed experts help. Thank you

Answer by Rute
“NOTE: I don’t want to use Active Directory in this case.”

SO you’re working in a Workgroup environment, rather than a Domain? This can be done, but it makes things infinitely more difficult. You need to create 20 user accounts on your server, one for each user. Now create groups, one for each department. Now add the users to the appropriate group. Now create your folder structure. For each folder, share it, but only give permissions to the group that needs to access it.

When creating the users, it important to create each user with the same username/password that the user is already using on their own workstation.

Anyone offer me advice for a Back-Link Checker?

Question by Chris Towers: Anyone offer me advice for a Back-Link Checker?
Can anyone offer me a decent and reliable back-link checker. Obviously I have encountered many across the search engines and all of them tell a different story. One says I have 700, one says I have have over 2000 and another says there is no links found lol. Is there anyone that can offer me a reliable and trusted one? ill be much in your debt!! Thanks icon smile Anyone offer me advice for a Back Link Checker? Chris

Best answer:

Answer by Jake
Many used to use the same data from the Yahoo site explorer which was retired some months ago, they have had to scramble and find alternate data sources, I’m not sure how many use their own spiders, but it is likely that most don’t examine the links on each of the billions of pages on the web.

Anyone offer me advice for a Back Link Checker?

Opensiteexplorer.org and backlinkwatch are two I’m familiar, OpensiteExplorer improving the quality of their spider data, although they actually reduced the number of sites they parsed, dropping low quality sites which tend to get more of the automated spam backlinks.

Ideally you would want to learn which backlinks are being credited by Google, I recall a Google rep at a conference examining the site of someone complaining about traffic, he found on his laptop that the majority of the 100 links to the site were being ignored by Google for being unnatural.

Q&A: What’s a fair price to pay for SEO?

Question by Liz: What’s a fair price to pay for SEO?
Just hired a web developed to create my website and want to know what a fair price to pay for SEO is.

Also, he is creating a CMS for it, since it needs to be updated ver frequuently. I heard CMS’s are harder to properly optimize… is this true?

Best answer:

Q&A: Whats a fair price to pay for SEO?

Answer by raina_vissora
I don’t know what going rates for SEO are, since I’ve never wasted the money on paying someone to do it. If you do a little research, you can do just fine optimizing on your own.

But in terms of CMS optimization, most SEO is done in the layout… which if you’re having a custom-built CMS made, you have full control over.
